1950-1955 eVENTS

June 25th, 1950- On this date, the Korean War had started. It was a conflict between the Democratic People's Republic of North Korea and Republic of Korea (South Korea). At least 2.5 million people had died. The war ended on July 27th, 1953. When it ended, Korea was divided at the 38th parallel into Soviet. The war was a long 3 years and a tragic finish.
SUMMARY- This video tells you how this war was fought between South Korea and North Korea. The Soviet Union and People's Republic of China were on North Korea's side. On South Korea's side was US, Great Britain, and United Nations. Before World War II, the Korean Peninsula was in Japan. After World War II, it had to be divided. The North half went to the Soviet Union and the South half went to the USA. The sides were divided on the 38th parallel. Both sides did not get along and violence occurred often. On July 17th, 1953 the war ended and both sides became independent.

Feb 22nd, 1951- On this day, the 22nd Amendment was finally ratified! This Amendment was fair and let other people have chances. It said, "No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of President more than once" This still goes on today: No president can stay president for more than 2 terms even if they are the best president yet.

Jan 1st, 1952- The first open heart surgery was attempted on this day! GM scientists made the mechanical heart pump. This enabled surgeons to do this kind of surgery. It is very dangerous to do this and needing the right equipment is essential. GM donated it and gave it to the surgeons in Wayne State University in Detroit.
Feb 28th, 1953- James D. Watson and Frances H.C. Crick discover the structure of DNA. We all have our own DNAs but how does it work? A lot of things in your body has a shape and so does your DNA. Watson and Crick discover the double helix which is basically a twisted ladder. It wasn't until 1943 that genetics was taken as a serious matter. But why? Since we didn't have the materials. Later on, things became more advanced so we can study genetics.

April 1st, 1954- How long has the US Air Force Academy been? It was first established in 1954. Airpower leaders argued to have a school for wars in the air. Airmen needed training; which was not being provided at the time. As years went by after 1947 and they developed more ideas, finally in 1954 it became official.

July 17th, 1955- Disneyland is a place everyone loves to be in. And it's pretty old! It cost 17 million dollars taking up 160 acres in Anaheim, CA. And, Disneyland is not only liked by youngsters, but by adults too! Disneyland was named after Walt Disney. And look how successful Disneyland is!

April 18th, 1955- Albert Einstein, the genius in science had passed away on this date. He was 76 and spent his last days in Princeton, NJ. He was known for his equation "e=mc2" also called "Einstein's Theory". He was German and was a theoretical physicist. He found what is called "general theory of relativity." What a inspiration he was and still is for many young scientists!
