1956-1960
January of 1956- Elvis Presley, known as the king of rock 'n' roll, became famous in January of 1956. He recorded his very first single called "Heartbreak Hotel" and became famous instantly. He was also in many television appearances as well as 33 movies at the time. When he died on August 16 1977, he had sold more than 600 million singles and albums! He left a memory of rock 'n' roll after his death shocking fan worldwide but is still remembered today.
November 6th, 1956- Dwight Eisenhower is re-elected as the president of the United States. Eisenhower beat Democrat Adlai E. Stevenson in the second executive election. During 1955, it was said that Eisenhower would not run for a second term. Though, republican leaders convinced him to do so. Eisenhower was elected in 1952 as a first term and received his second term 4 years later.
December 6th, 1957- The USA tries launching a satellite into orbit and fails. The satellite ends up exploding instead. The rocket was 4 feet above the ground but then, lost thrust and fell back. The fuel tanks exploded breaking the 3 LB satellite unusable. But, low fuel tank pressure may have caused the burning fuel to leak which could also be a reason of this explosion.

Summary- As seen in the video, this satellite basically explodes into flames. As you may have seen, the rocket did go about 4 feet into the air, then started catching flames. This might have been caused because of burning fuel to leak which is very severe. After it caught flames, you see it completely burning and all you see is fire and smoke. This attempt of the USA was a failure but they did improve safety lately.
July 29th 1958- NASA, also known as National Aeronautics and Space Administration was founded on this day. Just because of NASA, today we are discovering very unusual and amazing sights. Project Mercury was the first high mission to see if humans could live and survive in space. Man stepped on the moon as well and as years went by, technology became more and more advanced. Still, NASA is improving and will bring us a lot more to come.

May 4th, 1959- The Grammy Music Awards had its first show on this day. They had recognized many musical people with great popularity in their music so this was the right time to do it. Henry Mancini, Ella Fitzgerald, Domenico Modugno, and Ross Bagdasarian all won 2 awards that day. The first Grammy's were located in Los Angeles and in New York.
September of 1960- In September of 1960, viewers finally see a presidential debate on television. Debates went on a lot, just not on TV. Democrat John F. Kennedy and Republican Richard Nixon are in a debate live in Chicago. People who were watching TV, chose Kennedy over Nixon. Though, radio listeners thought Nixon won somehow. As you know today people watch everything on television to speeches, debates and inaugurations too.
May 1st, 1960- U-2 incident occurred on this date when a US spy plane (U-2) was shot down. The aircraft was flown by pilot Francis Gary Powers then was hit by the S-75 Dvina and crashed in Sverdlovsk. The US Government did not want anyone to know why the plane was in the air because it was a spy plane. They had to tell the Soviet Union a bit about their mission and then the US Government fell into shame. Gary Powers was sentenced with 3 years of prison and 7 years of hard labor.
